WHERE THE HELL IS wichita?

  photographs of my family 1977-1980

by DAVID HORNBACK

I was 15 when I first picked up a camera and began to photograph my family and my classmates at school in Wichita, Kansas. When I left to study journalism at the University of Kansas in 1980, I put my high school negatives into a shoebox and left them in my parent’s attic.

Nearly two decades later on a visit to Wichita, I discovered the old box of negatives and the corresponding contact sheets. I brought them back to Berlin with me (where I was living at the time) and put together a show titled “Where the Hell is Wichita?” Since then the show has traveled across Europe. On this site are many of the images from that show.
